International Human Rights Day: PHM stands in solidarity with the peoples of the world and demands an end to war and oppression

On International Human Rights Day, the People's Health movement stands in solidarity with people affected by war, hunger, forced migration, forced labor, attacks on free speech and all forms of human rights violations.

The world is on fire as we see wars and conflicts are escalating in several countries and regions in the world. The war in Palestine or Ukraine, the conflicts in Lebanon, Syria or Yemen, the catastrophic situation in Sudan and the Democratic Republic Congo, have an enormous impact on the right to health of the people. War, conflict, occupation and forced migration are key social determinants of health exacerbating existing inequalities, therefore the People's Health Movement (PHM) decided to act with its ongoing campaign to “Stop the Wars".

With the “Stop the Wars Campaign” PHM, a global network of grassroots health activists, academics, civil society organizations and social movements, sheds light on ongoing wars and conflicts in the world, with a special focus on the impact on healthcare systems and the access to health for the people living in war.

The PHM demands the protection of human rights without any restriction; respect and compliance with the principles of international humanitarian law; to free the victims from the heavy burden of oppression and facilitate their protection at all costs.

Through our “Stop the Wars-campaign, PHM wants to show and facilitate solidarity with all the oppressed people in the world. Through the campaign, PHM wants to give health activists different tools and ways to denounce these violations of human and health rights in war zones, and to act in their respective countries. So health activists can stand in solidarity with one another and defend the Right to Self-Determination and demand duty bearers uphold International Humanitarian Law.

We demand

• An immediate and permanent ceasefire of all wars.
• Respect for International Humanitarian Law.
• Stop attacks on civilians including health care personnel
• Stop attacks on health care infrastructure and critical services
• Free access to humanitarian aid and medical supplies to alleviate the suffering of the victims
• The immediate release of all health workers deprived of their freedom.
• The reconstruction of health systems and civilian infrastructure so that the rehabilitation of the population can begin.
