PHM South & East Africa IPHU & People’s Climate and Health Assembly Outcomes
We share with you some outcomes documents arising from the PHM South and East Africa International People’s Health University (IPHU) and People’s Climate and Health Assembly, held in Lilongwe, Malawi, from 25–30 August 2026, and seek your solidarity and support (see previous IPHU call and advertisement here).
The IPHU and the assembly brought together activists, researchers, health workers, civil society organisations, academics, youth, women, farmers, fisherfolk, people with disabilities, Indigenous people and others directly affected by climate-change-induced health and livelihood challenges. It provided an important space to connect knowledge, lived experiences, climate justice and the struggle for Health for All.
One of the major outcomes of the gathering was the Lilongwe Call to Action 2026, which captures the concerns, demands and proposed actions emerging from the Assembly. PHM SEA region now want to ensure that this Call to Action does not remain only a document produced in an IPHU classroom or conference setting. Further, our experience has shown that simply handing over a Call to Action document, without serious engagement and follow-up, can easily become the end of the process. We therefore want to go beyond dissemination and ensure that the Lilongwe Call to Action 2026 translates into meaningful engagement, concrete commitments and action.
The region is planning a Grand Presentation of the Lilongwe Call to Action 2026 to the Malawi Government on Tuesday, 13 October 2026. This will be accompanied by a major advocacy and public mobilisation campaign across SEA region. We attach the Climate & Health Advocacy Project Proposal for PHM SEA Region and Malawi to outline our plan for coming months with respect to the Lilongwe Call to Action.
Call for Financial support:
We appeal for financial support to enable PHM SEA to engage governments and other stakeholders, organise presentations and advocacy activities, strengthen media engagement, and follow up on commitments arising from these engagements. At the regional level, we are doing our very best with the resources available to us. However, with your support, we can do much more as we approach this important finish line. Here is our donation flyer.
Your support will help ensure that the work initiated through the IPHU and People’s Climate and Health Assembly goes beyond the classroom and conference room into concrete action that protects people’s health, livelihoods and communities across Africa.
