The Caribbean

Against imperialist aggression, unity for the defense of national sovereignty and the self-determination of our peoples

The People's Health Movement (PHM) strongly rejects the imperialist aggression of the United States government against the peoples of the Caribbean, expressed in its military deployment on their coasts and the summary execution of ordinary fishermen and alleged drug traffickers; the continuation of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade of Cuba, which has undermined the quality of its public health system, with its equitable and universal access; the current naval and oil blockade; and the attack against the Bolivarian revolutionary process and the government of Venezuela.

The Trump administration's aggression is aimed at appropriating the oil, land, and other energy and strategic resources of Bolívar's homeland; maintaining imperial and colonial domination in the region by stifling any possibility of national liberation and the autonomous construction of economic, social, and political systems that dignify the lives of our peoples; and strengthening its hegemonic position in the geopolitical dispute with external competitors such as the People's Republic of China.

We also denounce and reject the continued interference of the United States of America in the democratic processes of Latin America and the Caribbean, financing political campaigns for right-wing candidates in line with imperialist ambitions with loans and promises of false progress, the use of slander and legal proceedings to discredit and persecute progressive and left-wing political opponents, all with the aim of seizing the vast economic resources of the region and encouraging financial speculation by economic groups allied with imperialist power.

The PHM demands respect for free navigation and free trade protected by international law; for national sovereignty and the free self-determination of peoples in their internal affairs; for the decision of Latin America and the Caribbean to remain a zone of peace; and for the immediate withdrawal of the naval fleet from Caribbean waters and the end of the blockade against the people of Cuba.

We call on the peoples, social movements, and progressive, democratic, and leftist political forces of the region and the world to unite in internationalist solidarity with the peoples of the Caribbean, in particular with the Venezuelan and Cuban peoples, in rejection of the interventionist and warmongering pretensions of any imperialist power, governments, and far-right satellite forces.

The PHM calls for the internal contradictions in Venezuelan society and in any other society in the region to be resolved internally within the framework of respect for their constitutional norms, the peaceful and democratic resolution of controversies and differences, and the deepening of the path of economic, social, political, and cultural transformations with social justice, peace, real democracy, and respect for self-determination and national sovereignty.
