Webinar: Right to Health: The Impact of Mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo
PHM-Europe and PHM-DRCongo invite you to our webinar session on the impacts of extractive projects and the right to health, this session will focus on the case of Lubumbashi, in southern DR Congo, where intensive mining activities are polluting the air, water and soil, exposing local communities to toxic substances and putting their health at risk.
How can the right to health be protected and upheld? On the ground, communities are organising and mobilising to defend their rights.
We are pleased to welcome three speakers who will share their expertise :
Platini Alepa, Communications and Advocacy Officer at the NGO Étoile du Sud (EDS), will share the realities faced by communities affected by mining pollution and their mobilisation to defend their health and environment.
Ruben Koy Kasongo, Professor and PhD in Soil Sciences, specialising in pedology, geochemistry and mineralogy, will explain the mechanisms of soil contamination, the spread of pollutants and the risks of exposure for local communities.
Jean-Claude Katende, National President of the African Association for the Defence of Human Rights (ASADHO), will address the responsibilities of the State and international mining companies, as well as the means available to communities to defend their rights and seek justice and compensation.
