The wait is over: 5th People's Health Assembly, Mar del Plata 2024

In an era where health disparities loom larger than ever, the People's Health Movement (PHM) proudly announces the much-anticipated 5th People's Health Assembly, set to take place in the city of Mar del Plata, Argentina, from April 7th to 11th, 2024. This event marks a pivotal moment, the result of six years of cross-border collaboration, uniting hundreds of hours of dedication.

"Health for All" as a Pledge for "Buen Vivir"

Under the motto "Making 'Health for All' our struggle for 'Buen Vivir'", this assembly embodies a commitment to the principle of advocating for life in harmony, inspired by the wisdom and political action of ancestral peoples. This motto summarizes our vision and collective efforts to redefine health as a fundamental platform for achieving universal well-being.

A Global Reunion: Health Activists from Every Corner of the World

The assembly will host a diverse assembly of participants, including regional delegations, thematic groups, and global programs under the PHM banner, alongside advocates for health rights, human rights defenders, Indigenous people's rights activists, healthcare workers, social movements, organizations championing health rights, PHM networks, allies, policy makers, and academics. This gathering is not just a conference; it is a celebration, a critical dialogue to assess global health landscapes and chart the course for future health activism.

Exploring New Frontiers: A Curriculum for Change

The 5th Assembly's agenda is structured around five critical thematic pillars, designed to foster debate in plenary sessions, sub-plenaries, workshops, and through cultural engagements. These themes are crucial to our collective quest for transformative action in health:

  • Towards the transformation of health systems
  • Gender justice in health
  • Ecosystem health: food, energy, climate
  • Resistance to forced migration and war
  • Ancestral and popular knowledge and practices

1st International Conference on Collective Health and Primary Health Care

The PHA5 will held it's 1st International Conference on Collective Health and Primary Health Care. The Conference is organized by the National University of Mar del Plata (UNMP), the School of Medicine of the UNMP, the Argentine Federation of General Medicine (FAMG) and the Association of General Medicine of Buenos Aires (AMGBA).

The purpose of the conference is to make visible the experiences and practices carried out by members of health teams as well as by members of the communities of the regions where the PHM is present, to offer another instance of active participation (voice) in the Assembly, to encourage research activities and to favor scientific sovereignty through the systematized diffusion of local knowledge and practices.

From Past Assemblies to Mar del Plata’s Promise

The PHA's legacy, with previous assemblies in localities as diverse as Savar, Bangladesh; Cuenca, Ecuador; Cape Town, South Africa; and once more in Savar, has consistently drawn between 1,500 to 2,000 attendees from over 70 countries, making this the second occasion Latin America plays host. Each assembly has been an opportunity for experience exchange, mutual learning, and strategic action development, solidifying the PHA's role as a cornerstone for global health advocacy.

This assembly stands as a testament to the power of collective action in the relentless pursuit of a healthier, more equitable world for all.
