PHM Nepal successfully concludes National People's Health University

PHM Nepal successfully concluded its National People's Health University (NPHU) course from 13-17 November ‘25. The NPHU is a national adaptation of PHM’s capacity-building program, International People’s Health University (IPHU). The program also held a national half-day launch of Global Health Watch 7 plus celebration of 25 years of the People's Health Movement on Day 1, and paid tribute to the founders of PHM.The NPHU had 30 participants, while the other 40 invitees were present in the PHM 25 years celebration and Global Health Watch (GHW7) launching sessions.

Opening the celebration of 25 years of PHM Dr. Sharad Onta recalled the preparation phase of PHM and the launch of the first People's Health Assembly (PHA1_ in December 2000 in Savar Bangladesh, Dhaka. He highlighted the mission, structure, activities, and working of thematic circles of PHM. Mr. Shanta Lall Mulmi, Dr. Binjwala Shrestha, Dr. Rajesh Pandav, Dr. Mahesh Maskey, and Dr. Sarita Shreshtha reflected their experiences of involvement in activities of PHM. 

You can find the day-wise session schedule of the 3-day NPHU here. Participants were informed about a code of conduct (link) applicable to the IPHU. The sessions were complemented by group work and discussions where they presented multiple actions and strategies on the ongoing health problems in the country. 

In the facilitated group work, the participants provided suggestions on

  • Formation of NPHU Nepal alumni

  • Actions and strategies

  • Work out the follow-up mechanism

  • Solidarity with countries of the regional circle of PHM and at the country and regional levels.

  • Link the Nepal situation with PHM global actions.

In the concluding session, the participants reflected on their experiences of the course as an opportunity to understand the multiple issues of health and health rights. They took the course as a process of their capacity building and committed their active participation in PHM at the country, regional, and global levels.
