Sri Lanka crisis and the impact on Agroecology debates - Lessons to be learnt

After the economic crisis in Sri Lanka this year and the preceding ban on chemical fertilisers, the debate around agro-ecology has come to the fore once again. The Sri Lanka crisis has made movements and activists discuss and reflect on the best ways to transition to agroecology. There have also been observations from some countries on how the crisis and the links with the fertiliser ban is being used by agro-businesses to create an adverse discourse around agro-ecology, possibly weakening the agro-ecology movement.

The Food and Nutrition thematic group of People's Health Movement consulted with colleagues from PHM Sri Lanka who agreed on the need to ‘clear the air’ in terms of the exact turn of events in the country, on what led to the national crisis and in what way (if any) is it linked to the fertiliser ban. This is an important opportunity for PHM as well as movements working on agroecology and food security to learn from friends in Sri Lanka and listen to voices from different countries on how the debate around organics and agroecology is being played out in their respective countries after the Sri Lanka crisis. In this context we are organising a webinar discussion with the following objectives-

->To understand from friends from Sri Lanka as to what happened during the Sri Lankan crisis and in what ways (if any) it links with the fertilizer ban in the country

->Sharing from friends in different countries (Argentina, Bangladesh, India) on the impact of the Sri Lankan crisis on the debates on agroecology in their respective countries.

->To promote dialogue and learn from Sri Lanka in order to better create roadmaps for the transition to ecologically sustainable agriculture.

Tras la crisis económica de este año en Sri Lanka y la precedente prohibición de los fertilizantes químicos, el debate en torno a la agroecología ha vuelto a salir a la palestra. La crisis de Sri Lanka ha hecho que los movimientos y activistas discutan y reflexionen sobre las mejores formas de transición a la agroecología. También se ha observado en algunos países cómo la crisis y los vínculos con la prohibición de los fertilizantes están siendo utilizados por las empresas agrícolas para crear un discurso adverso en torno a la agroecología, lo que posiblemente debilite al movimiento agroecológico.

El grupo temático de Alimentación y Nutrición del Movimiento por la Salud de los Pueblos consultó a los colegas del MSP de Sri Lanka, quienes coincidieron en la necesidad de "aclarar el aire" en cuanto al giro exacto de los acontecimientos en el país, sobre lo que condujo a la crisis nacional y en qué forma (si es que hay alguna) está vinculada a la prohibición de los fertilizantes. Esta es una oportunidad importante para que el PHM, así como los movimientos que trabajan en la agroecología y la seguridad alimentaria, aprendan de los amigos de Sri Lanka y escuchen las voces de diferentes países sobre cómo el debate en torno a lo orgánico y la agroecología se está desarrollando en sus respectivos países después de la crisis de Sri Lanka. En este contexto, estamos organizando un seminario web con los siguientes objetivos ->Entender por parte de los amigos de Sri Lanka lo que sucedió durante la crisis de Sri Lanka y de qué manera (si es que hay alguna) se vincula con la prohibición de los fertilizantes en el país ->Compartir con amigos de diferentes países (Argentina, Bangladesh, India) el impacto de la crisis de Sri Lanka en los debates sobre agroecología en sus respectivos países. ->Promover el diálogo y aprender de Sri Lanka para crear mejores hojas de ruta para la transición hacia una agricultura ecológicamente sostenible.   Moderador: Dra. इस साल श्रीलंका में आर्थिक संकट और उससे पहले हुए रासायनिक उर्वरकों पर प्रतिबंध के बाद से  जैविक प्राकृतिक कृषि पर बहस एक बार फिर छिड़ी है।श्रीलंका संकट ने जैविक/प्राकृतिक कृषि पर काम करने वाले संगठनों और कार्यकर्ताओं को यह सोचने का मौक़ा दिया है कि किसी देश/समाज के लिए जैविक/प्राकृतिक खेती की तरफ कदम बढ़ाने के क्या सबसे बेहतर तरीके है| वही कुछ देश के कार्यकर्ताओं द्वारा यह भी कहा जा रहा की कृषि और उर्वरक आदि का व्यवसाय करने वाली बहुराष्ट्रीय कंपनियों  द्वारा श्रीलंका संकट और उससे पहले हुए उर्वरक प्रतिबंध का इस्तेमाल जैविक/प्राकृतिक खेती के खिलाफ माहौल बनाने के लिए किया जा रहा है, जिससे संभवतः जैविक प्राकृतिक कृषि आंदोलन कमजोर हो सकता है।

पीपुल्स हेल्थ मूवमेंट (पीएचएम) के खाद्य और पोषण समूह ने पीएचएम श्रीलंका के सहयोगियों के साथ परामर्श किया जिन्होंने इस मुद्दे की बारे में चर्चा करने और श्रीलंका में हुए असल हालातों को स्पष्ट करने की जरूरत पे सहमति जताई| यह वेबिनार चर्चा पीएचएम श्रीलंका और अलग अलग देशों में में जैविक या प्राकृतिक खेती पे काम करने वाले कार्यकर्ताओं से यह जानने का अवसर है कि किस तरह से इन देशों में इस मुद्दे पर बहस चल रही है इस संदर्भ में हम निम्नलिखित उद्देश्यों के साथ एक वेबिनार चर्चा का आयोजन कर रहे हैं-

-> श्रीलंका के दोस्तों से यह समझने के लिए कि श्रीलंकाई संकट के दौरान क्या हुआ और यह किस तरह (यदि कोई हो) से वह उर्वरक प्प्रतिबंध से जुड़ा है|

-> विभिन्न देशों (अर्जेंटीना, बांग्लादेश, भारत) में जैविक/प्राकृतिक खेती पर वर्तमान चर्चा साझा करना और कैसे उसपे  श्रीलंकाई संकट का प्रभाव पढ़ा है |

-> श्रीलंका में हुई घटनाओं से सीख और जैविक/प्राकृतिक खेती की तरफ सही दिशा देने के लिए संवाद
