Arsenic Contamination - Sadhina
Chapainawabgonj is one of the 61 districts of Bangladesh having Arsenic that has become a threat to health.

'We know that we one taking a glass of poison with the drinking of a glass of water but we don’t have any alternative'- says Sadhina a group member of Chapainawabgonj Area Development Center organized by PROSHIKA. In absence of adequate information, people think arsenic related problems as contagious and hereditary. The arsenic affected persons are being socially segregated. Relatives do not come to visit the houses where there are arsenic cases in the family. People do not want marry arsenic affected people. There are cases who have been divorced as they were arsenic affected. Due to lack of awareness many arsenic cases are being treated by witch doctors (Jhar Funk). Proshika has set up an Arsenic removal plant. The organization is trying to create awareness through disseminating fact-based information. But they can not handle the problem alone.
The Government, NGos and other social agencies should put there heads and hands together to combat the Arsenic problem of the country.
