Safe Motherhood - Laila Yasmin Lucky

Safe Motherhood - Laila Yasmin Lucky

Laila Yasmin Lucky, Khabaspur, Faridpur, gave an account of her mother's tragic death.

The family was in Dhaka but was not aware enough on the possible risks during childbirth. Possibly there was no regular check up during pregnancy. A Dai (untrained traditional birth attendant) was called in at the onset of pain in the evening and although there was intolerable pain with profuse bleeding, the Dai did not give up and agree to transfer the patient to Dhaka medical College Hospital till the next day's afternoon. It was too late and when little Lucky and the housemaid were attending the patient and Lucky's father was in search of blood, the patient was taken to the Operation Theater. There was no adult near ones to give her reassurance. Even, she had to sign the risk bond herself before entering the Operation Theater. She did not regain her sense after the operation.

Lack of awareness on material complications, over doing by the Dai and to some extent, indifference of Lucky's father at the initial stage combined together, caused the sad demise of Lucky's mother.
