Sex Worker - Shahnaj Begum

Sex Worker - Shahnaj Begum

Sex Worker - Shahnaj Begum

Shahnaj Begum, President, Durjay Nari Songha, Tejtunipara, Dhaka. Who is a sex worker herself gave a painful description, which brought her to the sex profession.

Shahnaj was the elder child of her parents. She lost her mother when she was young and her father married again. As eldest child, Shahnaj had to look after her younger brothers and sisters. So, she started earning as housemaid. She was sexually abused there. She joined a garment factory and was abused again. She went to work as road construction labourer, building construction labourer but everywhere she was harassed and abused. Realising the vulnerability and insecurity of women in the society she became fraustrated. Since she had to bear the economic burden of the family, she had no way out and ended up in becoming a sex worker.

At some point with the help of CARE Shahnaj with other sex workers organized themselves with a view to improve their status. They realised that the STD/HIV poses a threat to the health situation and it is spreading rapidly through the sex workers and/or their clients. The sex workers and their children have other health problems. They have problems of shelter and security also. They are looked down by the society and often refused the basic necessary services.

She is now working with the floating sex workers to improve their situation through the assistance of CARE-Bangladesh. She recommends that sex workers should have equal human rights and opportunities for fulfilling their basic human needs.
