Drama - Stories - People's Health Assembly - December 2000
Drama
Second draft for a drama as one contribution of the Europeans delegation to the regional testimonies at the PHA
Around 25 people are on stage, circle by a rope (at the rope is sticking on big sign “We”). In the middle of the circle a politician is elevated (symbolizing his election) and brought out of the circle.
Inside the circle a doctor treats an ill person. The politician recognises the need for a health-system and gives two doctors a position behind a health insurance - fund at the door of the public health – services. The politician pays into the health – insurance – fund and shows that therefore he can get treated. Everybody is paying into the fund. Both doctors take money out of the fund for each ill person they have treated. Then by and by more people are getting ill and need treatment. A queue is resulting in front of the doctor. The rich people in the last part of the queue are starting to swap their signs from "We" to "I", and waiting annoys them. They try to get into the first position of the queue they are gathering and starting a discussion (perhaps involving a passing pharma-representative) and then calling the politician to lobby him towards the introduction of a private health sector. So the politician installs a private health insurance with one of the former public doctors and a fund-trustee as a doorkeeper at the door of the private health system. The people are dispersing themselves to both doctors. The rich are paying big dollar notes thus having access to the private doctor (which could additionally be provided by a pharma-representative with special expensive medical equipment - suggestions are lacking). But the
"We" - people suffer a hit with a hammer (foam rubber) of the private health-insurance-find-trustee at the door of the private doctor. So the queue is again building up at the public health system.
After recognising the situation some "We" - people are gathering in a small circle (they might show up a sign: PHA). Out of his or her circle is getting a rope that everybody of the "We"
- people is holding in his hand. They contact the other "We" -
people and get them linked. Them some of the "We" - people take certain positions, others get people from the audience linked to the rope and lead them to a certain position. In the end the rope has to be configurated like this, if the
"We" - people pull it, the barrier has to be broken up, the hammer has to be "kept in peace" (eg. The hand of the fund-trustee could be linked to the rope with a handcuff).
