An Invitation - People's Health Assembly - December 2000
We are pleased to invite you to attend the People's Health
Assembly in Savar Gonoshasthaya Kendra, Bangladesh from 4-8 December 2000, followed by a
follow-up Forum from 10-13 December 2000. This is the first people's assembly on health to
be organised and an opportune time to re-establish health and equitable development as top
priorities in local, national and international policy-making with Primary Health Care as
the strategy for achieving these priorities. The Assembly promises to be an exciting,
vibrant and people-centred event, a forum where lived experiences, struggles, problems as
well as dreams and initiatives will be shared. Preparatory documents will be ratified and
people's networks consolidated to launch a concerted lasting campaign that seeks political
changes needed to make universal access to basic human services a priority and a reality.
The Assembly will cover a wide range of issues, taking an intersectoral and global
approach to health. These issues will be divided into five broad areas viz. the political
economy, the physical and social environment of health, the role of the health sector per
se and the needed social actions to overcome the current situation from the grassroots
level up. A series of relevant, lively and interesting workshops, roundtables and
plenaries as well as cultural and artistic events are being organised. The Assembly seeks
the wide endorsement of the People's Charter for Health and the formulation of the PHA
Action Plans.
We are expecting about 600 participants coming from community-based and grassroots
organisations, non-governmental organisations, trade unions, academia, international
agencies and governments from over 100 countries around the world. We are making sure that
there will be a strong representation of women as well as participants from developing
countries.
